NUS Industrial Design Assignment - A {____} Controller

The brief

My project

Rethink an everyday controller and design a unique controller for a pre-programmed snake game with Arduino Uno, prioritising affordance, cohesiveness, and user interactions.

Under the guidance of Akbar.

The Responsive Controller:

This controller gives you a visual feedback as to your next available moves, in response to your previous move and is coded mathematically in C++ with correspondence to the Arduino Uno housed inside..

Intuitive, dynamic, and fun.

Intuitive, dynamic, and fun.

As you watch your snake move on screen, your controller reacts to your moves, giving you a simple yet rewarding experience.

LED lights respond to your previous move, and signal your next possible moves.

LED lights respond to your previous move, and signal your next possible moves.

The corresponding lights adjacent to your current move will light up in blue, visually signaling your next possible moves.

Copper tape, LED lights, plywood, and a lot of code.

Copper tape, LED lights, plywood, and a lot of code.

Using simple and accessible materials, a controller was made, and with intense trial and error with code for the Arduino Uno, the controller was made interactive.

Initial Conceptualisation

Initial Conceptualisation

Wanted to go beyond fixed buttons that only have a singular function, to be able to visualise the sequence of moves made by the player.

Math-ed it out.

Math-ed it out.

Figured out the logic of the code for the switching on of the adjacent LEDs, and for storing the current position in the code.

Initial sketches, prototype, and final assembly.

Initial sketches, prototype, and final assembly.

Planned out the structure, and made a simple prototype out of cardboard to test out the code and concept, before integration of the LED lights
