NUS Industrial Design Assignment - Improving Online Insurance Literacy in collaboration with Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS)

The brief

My project

The online insurance literacy in Singapore is not widely talked about, unlike financial literacy as a whole. Many in Singapore are actually underinsured, and we would like to understand the online insurance literacy level, and explore ways to improve it.

Under the guidance of Alistair Norris, in collaboration with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

(Ler Shan Tan, Chloe Chong, Teng Xin Yun)

Through a novel approach of focusing on the parent-child dynamics in relation to insurance education, our group developed Legacies, an evolving app that changes with the growth of children, accompanying them to insurance independence with non-interventional support and guidance from their parents.

3 stages of evolution to cater to the needs of the growing learner

The app changes in UI and features to cater to growth and changing environments of the learner.

This novel perspective triggers the client to consider insurance literacy as a long-term process, rather than a one-time tool.

My process

My process

Numerous interviews conducted with parents and their children for an in-depth understanding

Numerous interviews conducted with parents and their children for an in-depth understanding

Using discussion tools tailored to our interview aims, we gathered data in aspects of literacy, impact of parents' literacy on children and the extent of it.

Abstraction and distillation of what truly matters

Through countless discussions, we identified patterns, filtered to key insights by choosing those which are evidence-based, actionable and relevant.

3 main design principles developed through intensive analysis of our qualitative data

By sorting into themes, deriving insights, and developing hypothesis, we curated these design principles to follow for our proposed solution.

Ideation and iteration

Going through numerous ideas and discussions, we felt inspired by the concept of a scrapbook about insurance knowledge built together by parent and child.
